Authentic view of Mount Aconcagua from Plaza de Mulas in spring

In the spring of 2023, I took this photo at Plaza de Mulas (4300m), the first official base camp on Mount Aconcagua. I hadn’t undergone any high-altitude pre-acclimatization and still managed to reach it without major altitude sickness symptoms. That said, climbing beyond this point without proper acclimatization is not advisable. What I experienced there is hard to put into words: the silence of the snow, the crunch of my steps, the sun hitting hard even though the cold was intense — such a paradox! — and the breath becoming thick, pure, and extremely dry. I felt small before the giant, yet also immensely alive. To anyone who makes it here, I recommend pausing, breathing deeply, and realizing that Aconcagua is not conquered — it is honored.
