Between Natural Fire and Rustic Soul

In the warm autumn of 2023, I traveled south of Mendoza and felt, for the first time, the ancestral energy of the Atuel Canyon: the emerald lake, the submarine-shaped rock rising from the waters, and that deep, grounding voice of the earth. A profound silence pierced through me, linking the present with ancient times.
This land was once home to the last Huarpe peoples, who found shelter in hand-carved caves and revered the canyon as sacred ground. For them, it was a spiritual sanctuary where rocks and water spoke in whispers. That energy is still present—for those willing to listen.
Travel tip for visitors from Mendoza or Chacras de Coria: the journey along Route 40 and RP 173 is approximately 280 km (~3h 45min by car). Set out early to enjoy a full day. Make sure to fill up your gas tank in advance (there are no service stations inside the canyon) and bring extra water bottles. A stop at Valle Grande offers breathtaking views and hydroelectric dams worth seeing.
